POTATO BOGGLES
it’s an old Scottish word for a scarecrow.
The name comes from:
- Tattie (or potato) = potato
- Bogle = a ghost, goblin, or frightening spirit in Scottish folklore
So a tattie-bogle is literally a “potato ghost,” but in practice it means a scarecrow set up in a potato field to frighten birds and animals away.
Beware of those skeptics and doubters who have turned aside from the truth of God, and who attempt to frighten timid souls out of the field of Faith. You know that a boggle succeeds only by putting on a false appearance.
The Devil”s boggles are quite skillful having been inspired by the great deceiver the eternal liar. Their single objective is to cast doubt, ridicule the truth and prepare your soul for Satan’s harvest.
Read and study Matthew 4.1-11, Luke 4.1-13, Hebrew’s 4.15, 2-18
God gave us his word to help make us aware of the devil’s temptations by allowing us to view the temptation of his son. Jesus provides us with the remedy. Read your scripture… study your scriptures and internalize them! Internalize the truth
Identify the boggles in your life, who was trying to scare you off, who are trying to attack the core of your FAITH. They will make fun of the changes occurring in your life, question your spiritual growth. We all have boggles in our life in one shape or another maybe a stranger on the Internet could be a family member, maybe one who sets across the table regularly or maybe a coworker
I have seen potato boggles at work in the church itself, trying to soften, trying to dilute, casting doubts upon church doctrine. Attacking the Bible itself, claiming there are errors and scriptures that have been misinterpreted “that is not what God meant,” etc. etc. etc..
Read, study and meditate Matthew 13.24-30. The Parable of the Tares (weed-boggles ).
I have stood in the doorway of the church following our worship service and had departing guests, especially snowbirds from the northeast who would ask me. “Do you always use the Bible in your worship and sermons?” Then would tell me the sad story of their experience in their church at home. Sermons inspired by a magazine article with no Bible content or similar.
We must constantly be on the alert for who and what is trying to make our ministry impotent and to drag us down, to tangle us in the Devil’s Snare.
Can you think of an example in scripture or life where boggles interrupted/destroyed a walk of faith?
Grace and blessings!
GOD IS GOOD
Shalom
