The title is a phrase that I heard early in my Christian walk. To really date myself it was several decades ago and those words were spoken in the first men’s prayer meeting I ever attended.
The building was classic Baptist Church architecture. We were in one of the classrooms off the dining room after the weekly men’s prayer breakfast. For the first time as an adult male I was in a room with other men kneeling down by folding chairs for a time of prayer, not really sure what was about to take place. I did not launch out. I was silent probably holding onto my chair.
The men in the room began to pray and finally came around to Dr. John Gill. Dr. Gill was the counselor who led me through my moment of salvation as I asked Christ into my life. Dr. Gill was a retired Baptist preacher, who in fact, served at one point at first Baptist of Osprey, I had great respect for Dr. Gill because of his role in my salvation experience. So I was really shocked when he began his prayer with the phrase that I used for a title today “forgive me for my unbelief”.
What a bombshell. Just a few days earlier, he and I had spent time in a small room discussing the essence of belief in Jesus Christ for salvation, And now…….forgive me for my unbelief!
That simple cry for forgiveness has been always present on my Christian journey of about 50 years testing, evaluating, checking, studying, focusing and praying regarding my faith. My faith, always conscious of strength and weakness, presence and absence.
One of the most interesting parts of that journey was learning the difference between in and on.
Just a couple of tiny little words, only two letters each, but oh what a significance they make when you pair them up with the word faith. The dictionary uses a lot of letters to give them their name. They are called prepositions and they are considered to be functional. Consider these applications……
“In faith”
“On faith”
This morning, I finished a book that I used to guide me in my daily devotional reading. The book was written by AW Tozier, and the title of it is “Jesus, author of our faith”. I highly recommend it to you. (Not a daily devotion). It contains a great discussion regarding those two little prepositions.
Functional words my friends how do they function with you? It is so important on how they function in our walk of Christian Faith. Do you walk on Faith or do you walk in Faith? Do you act on Faith or do you act in Faith? It’s a fun journey kick it off.
Tozer’s book is still available if you would like to read it . If you have difficulty securing a copy of Tozer’s book I will be happy to provide one. Just send me a note via email or text.
Below you will find a promo for the study that I’m going to offer in the very near future. We will meet in my home.(Still praying about zoom).
In this chaotic world I thought it would be good if we reviewed/answered these questions. Dr. Jeremiah has put them into a convenient format us to use!
